| What Is Asbestos? There are three types of Asbestos |
| • Crocidolite (Blue)
- Straight blue fibres. Usually comes from Australia or Southern Africa where asbestos mining was widespread. |
| • Amosite (brown)
- Straight brittle fibres light grey to pale brown in colour. amosite comes from South Africa. Amosite and Crocidolite
are called amphiboles. |
| • Chrysotile (white)
- Curly, flexible white fibres. Comes mainly from Canada, found in serpentine rock. Widely used in the Us. |
Crocidolite and Amosite have needle like fibres, Chrysotile has curly
fibres. Chrysotile is softer and more flexible than other kinds of Asbestos & at one time accounted for 95%
of Asbestos use worldwide.
The fibres if released & inhaled or swallowed can lead to serious health problems. Asbestos fibres can penetrate
the lungs & other body tissues causing permanent lung & organ damage.
Different types of Asbestos cannot be identified by colour alone, because of the adding of colours during manufacture
or coatings applied, the only way to safely determine the type of Asbestos is by analysing a small sample of suspected
material! |
